Head Coach: Mia Navellier

Mia has been coaching for 17 years and is going into her 13th year with us here at Golden Bear Volleyball. She has also coached at Piedmont Middle School, School of the Madeleine and Benicia High School. She played 7 years of volleyball and continues to play with an adult coed league when time permits. When she was not on the volleyball court growing up you could find her on the softball field, basketball court or swimming pool.  

Mia attended the University of Nevada Reno for 3 years and ended up graduating from San Francisco State University in 2008 with her Bachelors in Psychology. She believes in hard work and commitment and strives to bring out the best in not only her team but the individual players. Not only does she focus on volleyball skills and the mental aspect of the game, but the bigger picture and life lessons. Mia looks forward to the opportunity to work with those who will be a part of the 15 Nike team and Golden Bear Volleyball Club!

Played for the Cal Men's club volleyball team during 1999 thru 2002, and has been coaching various club and high school teams for over fifteen years. He emphasizes health, respect, and teamwork, and constantly strives to improve his coaching style to provide a fun, yet challenging gym environment for his team(s).

Head Coach: Zahra Jackson

Zahra is a graduate of Manhattan College, completing and earning a bachelors of science in Physical Education. She just received her Masters in Athletic Administration from Ohio University. Currently, she is teaching K-4th grade PE at Prospect Sierra School. Zahra has been playing volleyball since 6th grade. She moved up to the varsity team mid 8th grade year and started her freshman year. She was captain and MVP senior year in highschool. Although she really wanted to play in college she unfortunately could not because balancing academics and athletics would have been a challenge for her. Instead of playing in college she decided to start coaching her sophomore year. She has not looked back since. She has now been coaching volleyball for 8 years. She has plenty of knowledge of the sport both physically and mentally, and understands the skills and techniques used to be a great coach. She is very excited to be coaching with the Golden Bears again, and eager to train and get your daughter ready for the next level.

Head Coach: Natalie Berkowitz

Natalie is a recent graduate of UC Berkeley, where she studied Public Health and Public Policy. She played on the Cal Women’s Club volleyball team, where she captained the team for two years and was a player-coach for one year. She previously coached for Protégé Volleyball Club in Whittier, CA, teaching players of all ages the fundamentals of sand volleyball. She is currently the assistant coach for Cal Women’s Club Volleyball. She will continue her playing career next year at Emory University as a Law student. 
Natalie has been playing volleyball for over a decade, and was a 2014 Prep Volleyball Academic All-American. Her focus is to help players from a young age develop a sense of teamwork, accountability, positive energy, and a love for the game. 

Assistant Coach: Kyle Zolkin

Kyle is a sophomore at UC Berkeley, and is the Vice President and starting Libero for the Cal Men’s Club Volleyball Team. Kyle played Division 2 High School Volleyball at Santa Monica High School, starting his junior and senior year as Libero. Kyle has also played club volleyball for 4 years at Pacific Palisades VBC and Pac 6 VBC. Kyle helped to found and play on his High School Beach Volleyball Team and with his help, Santa Monica High School won Second Place in the IBVL in 2017. Kyle’s main focus as Libero is ball control and communication, enhancing the level of the game through teamwork. Aside from playing Libero, Kyle also has experience setting and outside hitting, being a strong and well-rounded player.

Head Coach: Claire Veeninga

Claire will enter her 12th year coaching for Golden Bear. A former Golden Bear player, Claire has been involved with the club for 16 years. She has coached at the high school level at both Albany and Bishop O'Dowd, leading her teams to successful seasons including back-to-back BSAL Championships and numerous tournament wins. 

Claire attended UC Berkeley where she studied Public Health and competed on the Division I Women's Crew team. She helped found and played on the Berkeley Women's Club Volleyball team which placed ninth in the Nation in their opening season. Claire played for the NorCal Wildfire, the Women's Professional Team of the NCVA from 2014-2016.

Michael is currently studying business at Cal. He is from San Diego and played for Coast Volleyball Club and has over 6 years of club/high school volleyball experience. He is on the Cal Varsity Men's Volleyball team and excited to join Golden Bear for his first year coaching with the club.

Head Coach: Frankie Arellano Vega

Frankie is currently a 4th year student at the University of California Berkeley studying Architecture under very prestigious professors. He played volleyball starting his freshmen year of high school and play club volleyball at Cal. He was the starting setter all four years in high school earning multiple awards such as all-league setter and switched positions at Cal to libero.

He is a second year Golden Bear Coach. Last season he coached 16 premier and pushed them to do their best defensively. As a young coach, he invites college women volleyball athletes to come out and teach, as well as play, with his team. The feedback provided by them helps the team and Frankie develop as a unit.  His focus is to help enrich a hard work ethic while maintaining fun and positive style of play.

Head Coach: Nile Minn

Nile Minn is currently studying Molecular and Environmental Biology as a sophomore at UC Berkeley. He's been playing volleyball since he was a sophomore in high school, and currently plays for fun at Cal as well as manages the men's volleyball team. He enjoys long naps, eating yummy food, and hanging out with friends.

Head Coach: Morgan Tade

Morgan Tade is a second year Psychology student at UC Berkeley. She started playing volleyball when she was in fifth grade and continued to play throughout middle school and high school as a setter and libero, earning First Team All-League her senior year. She played for IMUA Volleyball Club’s beach and indoor teams for 8 years and she is currently playing for the Cal Women’s Club team.

Throughout her volleyball experience, she has gained knowledge and skills that can be applied both on and off the court. Her goal is to help develop a hard work ethic and competitive mindset as well as emphasize the importance of teamwork, sportsmanship, and encouragement.

Zach has been playing volleyball for over five years, and is currently playing for the Men’s Club Team at Cal. He loves everything about volleyball, and hopes to share my love of the sport with his players! He is currently studying Business and Economics at Berkeley.

Head Coach: Alina Ng-Parish

This will be her second season with the GVC bear pack. Last year she assistant coached 15 Nike and had a wonderful time learning from Laura Challis. Taking what she learned from the season she continued coaching for El Cerrito High School as the Freshman Head Coach. Prior to becoming a coach, she played for Cal's club team her freshman year as a libero despite being a trained setter throughout her eight years of playing club.

For her, everything about volleyball comes down to solid passing and strong serves. So, she hopes to have a fun, but also a developmental season with the girls where they can really focus on solidifying their volleyball fundamentals (fun+developmental).

Lindsay is currently a 2nd year student at the University of California, Berkeley studying Economics and Data Science. She is from Los Angeles, California and has over 8 years of volleyball experience, including playing club for 6 years with Sports Shack and Actyve Volleyball Club and playing on her high school’s Varsity team for 4 years.

Lindsay strives to develop strong fundamental skills for her players while having fun. She can’t wait to share her love of the sport with her players and is excited for an amazing season!

Sarah McClendon

Club Director

Sarah has been involved with volleyball at a high level since she was 12. She is from Santa Cruz and beach volleyball was a way of life. She continued her passion for the sport playing in college at Santa Barbara City College and practicing with the UCSB team her senior year. She has coached with SB Volleyball Club, Gold Cal in Sacramento and Golden Bear for the past 15 years. Sarah has also coached high school varsity volleyball at Albany High and Piedmont High.

Sarah owns and runs ProAction Athletics giving our volleyball club a huge advantage with access to our private training studio. 

Her sole goal is to lead Golden Bear as a professional club and support the values of hard work, teamwork, and accountability for all of our players. She also keeps in mind that volleyball is a game and should be fun as well!


Justin Caraway

Volleyball Training Director

Justin Caraway has been a Golden Bear coach since 1998. From 1998-2004, every team he coached qualified for JOs, the highlight being a 5th place Club division finish in 2003 with 16 Blue, an extraordinary finish for a "second" team. From 1998-2003, Justin was the head girls and boys coach at Berkeley High School, leading the girls team to three undefeated ACCAL titles (2000-2002) and the NCS DI championship in 2001. He was also the head coach at St. Mary's HS, Piedmont HS, Cache Valley Juniors, and the Baylor University Men's club team.
